One thing I can attest to my success is that I truly feel that I have found my passion in life. It wasn’t always that way and I definitely had some rough times as a young adult trying to figure out what path I should take and where to go with my life. I say this to a lot of people but it truly is impossible to figure out what you actually want to do with your life at the age of 18-20. So much pressure is put on you to go to college and figure it out but in all reality you’re still a kid at that age! Hell, I feel like I still am at times!
What I began to learn in my 20s was that there was a problem — passion cannot be found in your head because it lives in your heart. No matter how hard you try, you cannot figure out your passion by thinking about it. You need to take action and feel your way to your truth, from the inside out. So here are 5 tips I’ve learned on how to find your passion in life.
Love Everything You Do
From this moment forward, if you don’t like something, you’ve got two choices: stop doing it OR love it with all your heart. Anything else is madness.
I did this exact thing in my mid twenties. Literally cut out toxic people, started saying no to things I didn’t want to do and just focused on me and what actually drives me. At the end of the day we are all creatures of habit and sometimes stick to what is most familiar although not always the right thing.
Choose to adopt the perspective that you can do what you love with your life. One of the best ways to strengthen this point of view is to surround yourself with people who are living examples. How many of your friends and family are following their passions? If it’s not many, it might be time to expand your circle. I associate with and am always most inspired by people who are so passionate about their work. Nothing drives me more than to see the success of other men/women my age!
When it Doesn’t Work, Quit
Okay this is not me saying go quit your day job on a whim but what I am saying is that there are many people who hate their jobs and know that they want to do something different, but instead they stay in their hated jobs for a long period of time regardless. The main reason for not leaving is that they haven’t actually figured out what it is that they want to do. Now lets talk about that – you will never learn or discover your ideal career by sitting around just thinking about it.
Don’t Make Money Your Primary Concern
When I first started blogging I never looked at it as a way for me to make money. In fact, it didn’t return any income for a long ass time. The difference is, I didn’t care! I was so passionate about what I was doing it was never my goal to be honest. If you’re looking to spend your life doing something you love, the best way to start is to treat financial concerns as secondary. What I learned however is that if you allow yourself to pursue your curiosity you will find yourself in the position of power and eventually the income will come in.
Think What You Loved Doing as a Child
Sometimes it’s hard to figure out what you are actually most passionate about. I think a great way to do this is to try to remember the activities you enjoyed during your childhood or before “adulting” happened. What hobbies did you enjoy and would you enjoy them now? Use these kinds of memories to help you find your passion as an adult. Another perspective is to imagine that you are very old or had a million dollars. What do you wish you had spent the last 20 to 30 years doing? Or what would you do if you had all that money as a hobby? Sometimes these are ways to help bring your passion to life.
Expect Success and Failure
I wish I could tell you everything for me has been smooth sailing but I’m human, life is tough at times and well sometimes you just fail. The worst thing you can do however is allow failure to define you and deter you from continuing your passion. We all have a huge number of fears (I know I do). That can be failure, success, vulnerability – they all speak to us and sometimes convince us that we shouldn’t do what we love.
If you let these voices win over you, you will feel like your passion is not realistic and well – thats DEFINITELY not the case. Understand that trying something new always comes with success and failure and it’s all part of the journey we take but be strong and reassure yourself that you are headed in the right direction.
