Considering there are millions of blogs out there, sometimes you can feel like it’s hard to stand out. Everyone does things a bit differently but I’ll be honest, when I started blogging about 4 years ago, my photography SUCKED. Granted, I didn’t have a budget to hire a photographer and definitely had no clue what I was doing but as with everything in life, you learn and you improve. Throughout the years I’ve definitely learned what it was I have needed to do to enhance my photography and my blog style in general. This all comes with time but because everyone always has questions about it, I thought I’d round up my top 5 fashion blog photography tips.
LOCATION IS EVERYTHING
Although it would be SO much more simple to shoot everything in the comfort of your home, unfortunately it’s just not that exciting for the viewer. I mean think about it — us bloggers who go on shoots we logistically don’t want to shoot just one look so we have to plan our outfits ahead of time, and pack every damn thing into our car so that we can change and get multiple looks out of it. However, it is so necessary if you want to ramp up your blog photos.
Not only does it just look better, I love adding a bit of lifestyle and realism into my photos which is why I always prefer outdoor shoots. Don’t always go to the same places, try to change it up because you don’t want your readers to see the same background every single post.
LEARN TO POSE
I know, I know this is much easier said than done. People always ask me how I know how to pose and take photos since I do it so often. Well, it’s exactly that — I do it so often that I’ve learned. With everything you do in life, you will learn. It’s hard the first, second and third time but by the 20th time you will become a natural.
With practice you will learn which poses you like, which you don’t like, which are flattering and which are not. Before you know it you’ll have it all down to a science. If you’re looking for that kind of street style photography, try to not be too posed, instead act like you’re going on with your day, walk across the street and act like the camera is not there. Basically act like you’re Beyonce.
CHOOSE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER
When I first started hiring photographers, it took me quite a bit of time to find the ones that fit my style best. This is all part of the process. It can be so difficult finding someone that you feel comfortable with, who doesn’t charge you a fortune and who cares enough to stand there taking your shots while you pose. Oh and not to mention wait while you change 5 times. At the beginning, I’m not gonna lie — it was my mom the majority of the time. I mean think about it — mom will always be patient, always help you get that perfect shot and never ever judge you. Once I was comfortable taking photos on my own and kind of got the hang of the whole “blog” thing, I decided to work with professional photographers. I did my research and to be honest it was a lot of trial & error but once you find your match it’s such a breeze. My photographer now knows exactly how to take my photos, what I need per outfit and what angles to shoot me at that I’m going to be happy with. We literally can shoot an outfit in about 5-10 minutes once we find that perfect location.
Another thing? Find someone who is creative and wants to try new things or comes up with fun ideas. The best part about blogging and photography is creating something new, so working with someone who is as passionate as you in their field makes such the difference and you can bounce ideas off each other.
BE SELECTIVE
While you may love every set in a shoot, unfortunately you don’t want to include 15 photos of the same thing so when you receive your photos back go through them and be selective. Narrow down the shots that you really love and how I always do so is as follows: Photos that show off your full outfit, detail shots (jewelry, clothing details, etc..), half body shots and maybe something with a bit lifestyle feel. When I am absolutely in love with a particular shoot, I save a few of my favorites and spread them out on Instagram. It helps to add content throughout the weeks/months.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT TIME
For the best lighting shoot at either sunrise or sunset. Anything in between is do-able but will be much more difficult and time consuming. The best lighting is either early in the morning or my favorite – golden hour. If you have to shoot in the middle of the day you may need to opt for shady spots. Being in direct sunlight will be more problematic so try to pick the right time to make your life easier!
Most of all, remember what you are doing this for and don’t forget to have FUN! Hope you guys enjoyed these 5 Fashion Blog Photography Tips and let me know if you all have any questions.
