Time. Age. Years. Agh, it goes by so fast, doesn’t it?! I remember before I turned 21 the years couldn’t seem to go fast enough. I wanted to hit my “adult” years SO badly that everything seemed SO slow. I wanted to get to the good ol “twenty-one” more than anything and well – once I did time seemed to not be on my side anymore. I know it sounds silly because I’m only 29 but because I’m turning 30 this year, I’ve definitely come to reflect on it. Trust me, I’m no one that is terrified of getting older it’s more so that I never want to FEEL old. Does that make sense?
Time is an unforgiving force that rushes us into the next stages of life and there are NO brakes on it. With age we mature into adults who have more and more responsibilities but who says that getting older means we have to lose that youthful nature we once had? I sure don’t want that to ever happen. In my mind, growing older doesn’t actually have to mean growing up (with reason, of course). So check out my five ways to stay young at heart, no matter how old you become:
#1 Forget the opinions outside your own.
Anyone who really knows me well knows that I try my best not to take to heart the opinions of others. It goes back to how we once were as kids when we would play carelessly and not worry what people thought of us. The minute we allow outside opinions to tell us what we should and should not do, we lose the ability to recognize our instincts. We tend to get older and somehow the simple joys of life are lost because society tells us we have to act a certain way or think something else. Always be your own person, always do your own thing and be happy with who you are and what makes YOU smile!
#2 Exercise!
Obviously this is something we are taught day in and day out but there’s a reason it’s drilled into our minds – because it works. It keeps your bones in shape and your muscles flexible. It means that as you get older you can bend over without asking someone to help pull you back up. Finding the right workout for your can make you feel so alive and I’ll be honest – I’m always shocked how many older men/women I come across at the gym who could out-run me any day. They are #goals.
#3 Never Stop Dreaming
I’ve had to learn this one the hard way. I’ve definitely been in ruts in my life and had to dig myself out of them which had taught me to never ever stop believing that your wildest dreams are always within reach. As a child we are ALWAYS and I mean ALWAYS dreaming! What happens that we get older and think dreams are no longer attainable? It’s so silly – it’s like we all the sudden become older and pessimistic. I’ve learned you have to believe in something to make it come true. Wishful thinkers in my mind are the ones who turn ordinary ideas into extraordinary things. Young hearts are those that wish for bigger and better things every day and feed their soul with it so never ever stop believing no matter how big or small the dream is.
#4 Laugh Often
Laugh a lot – laugh at yourself. I am always caught laughing at myself because it’s one of those things that just keeps us feeling happy and feeling young. Yes, shit happens in life and yea you can cry about it and be upset (which of course I have those days) but what I try to do the most of is LAUGH. The other day if you guys follow me on Insta Stories then you saw I got a parking ticket. I could have chosen to be upset and complain and let it ruin my day but instead I laughed and thought why not laugh it off, pay the damn thing and not let it ruin my day? Laughing can make life SO much easier and so much better for everyone!
#5 Cut the Negative People
There was a period in my life I felt heavy and well,.. “blah.” It was partly due to all the negative people I was surrounding myself with and then I realized I wanted to feel happier and younger and more free so I started cutting any negativity from my life. Nowadays I may only have my family and a select few close friends but I feel positivity and empowerment thrives in groups of like minded people and that is exactly what I have. So if you find yourself seeing you have negativity in your life don’t be afraid to cut it out. Sometimes its important to be selfish and do what is healthiest for you!
Time is one of those things that will always keep moving but staying young at heart is possible no matter what with a few simple adjustments here and there.
