Let’s be honest, the change of seasons affects how we do many things in our daily routines such as how we eat, dress and travel. So shouldn’t it also change how we take care of our hair? How you care for your hair in the summer should be different from how you care for it in the winter. Here are a few tips to keep your hair looking its best during winter, spring, summer and fall!
WINTER: Dry air and frigid temperatures are the worst. Besides drying out our skin, our hair takes a serious beating. I cannot begin to explain to you guys how dry my entire body is and how tired of it I am!! What I like to do is shampoo a little less and use moisture rich products. My favorite is the Hair Food Moisture Collection. It is not only free of parabens and mineral oil which does not strip your hair of its natural oils, but it is made with honey essences and provides luxurious moisture and nourishment for healthy looking hair. The moisture conditioner contains three essential hydrators to regulate moisture absorption, locking in hydration so hair feels moisturized from within. Another thing I love to do is to the sleep with a humidifier to help keep moist air circulating. It’s not only great for your hair but you’ll wake up feeling less dry and more refreshed!
SPRING: Spring is a great time to let your hair be more natural without styling. I like to use less hot tools and let my hair grow out. There’s not as much humidity in the spring, yet it is not quite as dry as the winter. So it’s a win-win!
SUMMER: Okay, summer is one of those times you need to really take care of your hair. Between the humidity, trips to the beach (salt water) and all those UV rays, your hair gets a big beating. Since the weather is already hot as is, I like to avoid any additional heat styling as well. Plus there is something about that natural un-done beach look during the summer that just works. The more heat styling you do and the longer you wait in between haircuts can cause more and more split ends. The worst thing that seems to happen in the summer is on anyone who has colored hair/highlights because they really suffer under the sun. In this case I recommend using the Hair Food Sulfate Free Color Protect collection. This line gently cleanses and conditions color treated hair for luxurious shine and is free of sulfates, parabens, gluten, mineral oil and dyes. One other thing I recommend whenever possible?! Wear a hat in the summer! It helps protect the hair so much and helps those highlights last a big longer.
FALL: This is the time when temperatures start to cool down a bit and it’s important to keep hair hydrated so it is ready for that winter cold coming up. Go back to a moisture rich shampoo and conditioner like this one and consider doing a scalp cleanse and exfoliation. A lot of salons offer these treatments and it’s important to do because a healthy scalp is the base for healthy hair. One thing I will say for those windy days, I love wearing my hair in a bun because it will protect most of your hair, especially the more damage prone ends! I usually tie my hair into a ponytail, then tuck the ends up into the bun and spritz it with some kind of a UV protector. Another option I love is to wear your hair in a loose braid when you can! It looks chic and does wonders to protect your hair!
