Finding your own personal style can be a serious struggle – trust me, I’ve been there. I still to this day have moments where I stare into my closet full of clothes and tell myself I have nothing to wear that I “like.” I have realized however it’s important to be able to adapt to all the crazy style changes while still keeping to what is true to yourself.
Great style is all about approaching each day with confidence and the ability to feel legitimately beautiful in what you are wearing. Lets be honest — how many times do you put on an outfit that just feels so “you” and instantly you feel 10x more comfortable, confident and beautiful in your own skin? So why do we try to conform to the crazy style changes just to fit in? Trust me, I have no clue why we do it but I’ve learned its important to stick to your own and you will feel and exude a confidence that others will aspire for.
With that being said, here are some tips I’ve found that have helped me find my personal style and hopefully help you all too!
Sizing. No one can see what the size tag reads on the inside of your dress and lets be honest — no one actually cares! The focus should not be about fitting into the smallest size possible because sometimes that just doesn’t work. A number shouldn’t make you feel confident – how you actually FEEL in that dress does. When you feel your best, you stand taller, smile wider and people will notice! I have had times where I size up to a Medium or Large even because it just works better in certain styles! Some brands size small, some brands size large – who cares! Buy the size that makes YOU feel your best!
Closet Clean out. One thing I am guilty of is keeping items in my closet that I have not worn in a LONG ass time. So what I have now adopted into my life is to toss what you haven’t worn in the last year so you can start fresh. I mean, who doesn’t like new clothes after all? This helps to rebuild your wardrobe with a style that really reflects your life and career. Remember, who you are at 30 will never be the person you were at 20 so don’t be afraid to get rid of those items you now say “OMG how did I wear that before?!” Sometimes we get stuck into feeling like, well I wore that when I was younger so I bet I can pull it off again. No, no, no — trust me — donate it and move on! You’ll find 10x better items!
Get advice. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from a professional. You don’t actually need to pay a personal stylist — a lot of the time I go to a department store and ask for advice and opinions from the associates who work there. Remember they know what they are doing and they might know what items they have hidden around the store that you don’t know! I’m never afraid to ask and tell someone what my favorite kind of pieces are and then have them curate some looks for me that I can tweak.
Accessorize. My favorite. Accessories are without a doubt the easiest way to pull any look together regardless of the vibe you want to achieve. You can easily update jeans a white t-shirt with some layered jewelry or bold statement pieces. You can add a patterned scarf, ankle booties or a clutch to instantly dress up any look. So what I always say, when in doubt, accessorize!
Be Yourself. The single most important thing when developing your personal style is to be true to yourself. Like I said, don’t focus on the size or designer label. Experiment with patterns, textures, accessories and shoes. It ALL boils down to feeling good in your own skin and your style should reflect and celebrate your life and personality. Own your style and be proud of it. If someone doesn’t like it, who cares! I never do. Trust your gut because something that makes you feel confident and beautiful never ever goes out of style!
