As you guys may know from following along on Instagram, I had the opportunity to visit Bolthouse Farms last week to tour their fields. I got to see how their carrots are harvested and also visit their plant!
If you guys aren’t familiar (or need a little refreshing) Bolthouse Farms® provides carrots, juices, smoothies, and salad dressings. They are some of the best I’ve had! To be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect on my visit, and I’ll be the first to admit it was SO intriguing. I have a newfound respect for all the farmers and plant workers out there. It truly is remarkable, the type of work they do and their passion for it!
Bolthouse Farms has been farming since 1915, and this began in Grant, Michigan. By 1950, Bolthouse Farms was the leading carrot supplier in the Midwest with a reputation for flavor and quality. Now they have grown all the way to California’s Central Valley (which is where I was lucky enough to visit!).
When arriving at the farm, I was in shock by how many carrots I could see! We had the opportunity to ride their harvester as well to see how they extract the carrots from the ground, into another vehicle, and over to the plant.
Afterwards, we made our way to the plant, which may have been my favorite part. They showed us the process of how everything is created in creating carrot juice, shredded carrots, baby carrots, including the details of peeling, sorting and bagging the carrots. We also got to participate in a sensory test of carrot juice, and even had some carrot ice cream (which btw was SO delicious!).
Now a little about the carrot juice! Bolthouse Farms believes in making one better choice each day, which is something we can all do. They have promised to use fewer ingredients that people don’t want and more of what we DO want. Carrot juice is SO good for you and provides the antioxidant Vitamin A. My favorite part? There is no added sugar, no artificial colors/flavors and no artificial preservatives.
I can officially say I have a newfound respect for not only how carrots are harvested but just farming in general. It truly is remarkable and often we don’t realize how much work and dedication goes into some of the food we eat.
