As an esthetician I have done quite a number of brows in my day. Not to mention I have a pretty hefty brow myself – always have. Not going to lie, when I was in middle school some bullies used to make fun of me for my thick eyebrows and I would come home crying to my mom – I know, kinda sad. Since my mom was (and still is) an esthetician she reassured me it was nothing to worry about and she could help me clean them up a bit. The best lesson she ever gave me – NEVER over pluck. Fast forward to High School and College, suddenly having thick brows was cool again. You just can’t keep up can ya? LOL.
As I got older I really started to have a fascination with brows and just how they can completely frame your face. When I became an esthetician myself, I just absolutely loved doing eyebrows because of how immediately it refreshed the face and made women instantly feel more confident. With all that being said, I still to this day do my own eyebrows (with the help of my mom sometimes for a 2nd eye) and I thought I’d share with you all my best tips & tricks to the perfect eyebrow shaping every time.
Always tweeze after showering
I mean, it’s not a MUST but if you are sensitive to tweezing, after showering will have you feeling less stressed since the hair practically slides right out of the follicle.
Groom prior to tweezing
Before you even go touching a single strand of hair with tweezers, brush your brows. It helps you can see what you are doing. I always have a fresh set of spoolies nearby. This pack comes as a set of 50 and is perfect for brow and makeup application.
Invest in new tweezers
Ditch the old tweezers. New tweezers are worth it and will save you time and frustration. My absolute favorite that we swear by at the salon? Rubis! They grab the finest hairs and just make tweezing a total breeze. Seriously just buy them – you will thank me later.
Plan your plucking
Know what your brow plan is before you begin plucking – you need to have an idea of what the finished product should be. Random, pointless plucking should always be avoided. Trust me – over plucking is NEVER a good look.
Pluck outside the brow line
For the most natural brows, don’t touch the middle hairs of your brow and tweeze only the hairs that are far outside the brow line. It never hurts to be too conservative. This is actually what I used to do back in the day before I properly knew how to shape my brows. I couldn’t stand having “messy” brows so I would only do what I called a “cleanup” and then allowed a professional (aka my mom) to go close to the brow line. This always ensured I never had to go through the awkward growing out phase to fix a mistake.
Never wax while using Retinol
Stick to tweezing, never wax, if you are using retinoid products. It truly makes the skin too sensitive and if you wax, it can cause a skin tear or scarring damage. Trust me, I’ve actually made the mistake on myself.
When in doubt – Ask a pro
It takes four weeks for your eyebrow hair to reach the surface after a grooming. That means you only need to have your brows professionally done once a month. Basically, you can hire a professional without breaking the bank.
Solution for Peach Fuzz
Since I’m a big stickler for uber sleek brows, after I wax, I always like to use brow touch up razors to clean up any surrounding loose hair or peach fuzz that I missed. It ensures a super sleek finished look to the brow which I love. My favorite are these from Japonesque. I use them every single time I shape my brows and sometimes in-between.
