One thing I find that a lot of people get confused with is the order in which to layer their skincare products. I get it, my routine includes a lot of products and it can get a bit overwhelming at times to know when to use what. Here are my tips on how to properly layer your skincare products:
STEP 1: CLEANSER
Always start off with a clean face! Pick a good cleanser that doesn’t strip your skin of its natural oils and is gentle on your skin and non-irritating.
STEP 2: TONER/ESSENCE
A good toner can restore the skin’s pH, remove hard water residue, and replenish skin.
STEP 3: SERUM
Serums are packed with active ingredients that target specific concerns. They are a little pricier but I highly recommend adding a serum to your routine if you don’t already.
STEP 4: EYE CREAM
As you may know, the skin around your eyes is the thinnest on your body—meaning your eyes can always use some extra TLC.
STEP 5: MOISTURIZER (If you use face oil, you can apply it before or after your moisturizer depending what works best for you).
Seal your routine in with a moisturizer. Moisturizers are usually thicker in consistency because they are designed to absorb slower than your other products.
STEP 6: SPOT TREATMENT (if this applies to you)
I usually say to apply spot treatment after your moisturizer to avoid it smearing or getting anywhere other than the effected pimple. Sometimes spot treatments have harsh chemicals that dry out the skin so you want to be careful that stays only where you want it.
STEP 6: SUNSCREEN (Unless your moisturizer has SPF in it already)
Always choose an SPF of 30 or higher.
*FOR MASKS AND PEELS: When doing your weekly mask or peel, make sure to do this step after cleansing & toning the skin but before applying your serums. Once you wash off your mask, then follow up with steps 3-6.
