These days it’s all about the “no makeup” makeup look or natural makeup in general. I’ve always been a fan of it and it’s typically a go to of mine on an everyday basis. The trick (to me) is keeping the skin hydrated, dewy and I happen to love sticking to cream based products since I feel they really blend into the skin flawlessly. Here’s my go-to natural makeup tutorial in step by step form!
STEP 1: PREP YOUR SKIN – Before you begin applying your makeup, take the time to prep your skin with a high-quality moisturizer. Choosing the right kind of moisturizer is a crucial piece of the puzzle. I always feel that the more slip the skin has, the more beautifully your foundation will lay on your skin. Being hydrated is so key to a beautiful makeup application!
STEP 2: PRIMER – Now that your skin is well moisturized, prep your face with primer. Whether you’re planning on applying a light coat of foundation or a full face of makeup, primer is an important step. Using primer under your makeup will make your look last longer. Also, depending on the kind of “look” you are going for you can opt for so many different primers and because I love a very dewy look, I opted for an illuminating primer – L’Oreal Visible Lift Radiance Primer.
STEP 3: FOUNDATION – For a very natural makeup application, I prefer to opt for a foundation that is more hydrating than matte. I just feel it has a more natural look to the skin and you can always set the parts of your face that get a little too shiny. I prefer to use a soft foundation brush (this is my favorite) or my fingers since I feel like it really melts the product into your skin. Fingers will give you a more sheer application while a brush or beauty blender will give a more full coverage look. The foundation I used here is Laura Mercier Silk Creme Moisturizing Photo Edition Foundation in Sand Beige (one of my all time OG products).
STEP 4: CONCEALER – To reduce the appearance of dark under-eye circles and create a glowing, bright look, apply light concealer beneath the eyes with a damp sponge or makeup brush. The best tip I’ve learned is to have 2 different concealer shades. One should be very similar to your skin tone, and can be used to cover dark spots, pimples, and other facial blemishes. The other should be lighter than your skin tone, and can be used to highlight certain areas of the face or add clarity to your makeup look.
STEP 5: SETTING POWDER – I personally do not like to powder my entire face since I don’t like a very matte look. I usually will powder the T-Zone area to keep that part looking shine-free while allowing the rest of my skin to keep that nice glow. Favorite setting powder is Laura Mercier Translucent Powder in shade Honey.
STEP 6: CONTOUR – This step is totally personal preference but I thought I’d include it for those who like to carve out their face a bit. I wouldn’t recommend contouring for a “day” look because the whole point is to not give too much of an illusion that you are wearing a ton of makeup but for a nighttime look I’d say totally go for it. Use a matte shade of bronzer or contour stick and apply it in the shape of a number “3” on both sides of the face. Start at your forehead, pull the bronzer along your cheeks, then sweep it across the jawline, reaching all the way down to your chin. I prefer to be a little lighter with contour. Pro Tip: Don’t forget to blend it into your neck. Using: Fenty Beauty Match Stix.
STEP 7: BLUSH – My all time favorite step is blush because I feel it just brings life back to the face instantly! For a natural look I am ALL about using a more cream consistency rather than powder since I feel it really lays beautifully on the skin and gives that sun kissed look. Apply it with a dense brush or fingertips for the best application and blend outward. Current obsession is the Flower Beauty Gel Crush in shade Strawberry.
STEP 8: HIGHLIGHTER – The right highlighter adds a bit of glam and glow to every makeup look. Whether you’re opting for a more natural look or want something bold and beautiful, highlighter can complement your makeup application. Check out my post 7 places to apply highlighter here for some additional tips on the perfect application.
STEP 9: EYESHADOW – For a simple eye look and sticking to more liquid based products for this look, I love the Too Faced Melted Chocolate Liquid Eyeshadow! Place them right in the center of your lid (or wherever you desire) and then blend out with a dense brush or fingertips for a very natural look. Remember to just keep the eyes simple and neutral.
STEP 10: MASARA – If you’re going to use only one makeup product, mascara should be at the top of your list. A few swipes of mascara can make your eyes look brighter in a single step. For a natural look I would opt for “black-brown” shade to keep it more subtle and skip the lower lashes. Using: NARS Climax Mascara.
STEP 11: LIP LINER – Lip liner can be your best friend to really enhance the shape of your lips and over line a bit if you desire. I will always use a lip liner if I’m going out. One of my all time favorites is Charlotte Tilbury Iconic Nude (goes with SO much)!
STEP 12: LIPSTICK OR LIP GLOSS – For a playful everyday look I’ll usually opt for lip gloss because I feel it’s youthful and easy to wear. This is total personal preference on what you choose to wear but I would stick to a light pink or nude color to keep it natural and cohesive with the look. You could even use your blush stick to pop a bit of color on the lips as well! The one I’m using is Persona Cosmetics Lip Gloss in Pink.
