Packing is one of those things that never seems to get easy no matter how many times you do it. I promise, I’m right there with you all. I’ve done it so many times yet every time I seem to have mental breakdowns at the thought of having to begin happening. I swear it happens without fail, every darn time. I will admit however, I have gotten a slight hang of it after quite a few trips under my belt. With that being said I thought maybe I should share a few of my best kept secrets to packing like a glam gal on the go:
One thing I’ve learned along the way — it all begins with finding the right luggage. I promise you all, this is KEY! I can’t even begin to tell you guys how many trips I’ve been on in the beginning of my travel years where the wheels didn’t turn, the body of the luggage crumbled, my bag broke and well, you get the picture. Choose a luggage wisely and you’ll be one step ahead of the gang already. One of my current recommendations is the Ricardo Beverly Hills Arris Collection. I have both their carry on luggage and larger suitcase for all my travel needs and I can’t live without it now. What I love is it is not only super chic (key for any glam gal of course) but it provides tons of interior pockets for easy organization, has a protective outer bumper to prevent against dings and scratches and one of my favorite features is when you purchase their luggage you receive a complimentary tile bluetooth tracker so you can track and make sure your luggage never gets lost again. Helps me not stress, because trust me, I am quite a worrier! Oh and most importantly, it’s LIGHTWEIGHT and for those of you who are worried about the weight of your luggage, always make sure you get a good quality yet lightweight suitcase! This is where you can make a big mistake in the end!!
So now moving onto the packing part. I’ll typically start with one side of the suitcase and put all my clothes on this side. If I’m bringing any hats this is where they will go. If I bring more than one hat, I will pack the hats inside of each other according to size. In the bottom hat, I add scarves, shirts or bathing suits to prevent the hat from caving in. I then put the hat down on the flat side and put clothes all around the crowns that way it keeps everything snug and in place.
Typically for a trip I also like to think of some kind of color palette. For example, as you can see below, I’ve stuck to more pastel colors such as blues, light pinks and whites. This just makes my packing process MUCH easier and it makes it so that all my pieces are interchangeable and I can mix and match everything throughout the trip and not have to worry too much.
The Ricardo Beverly Hills Luggage has a great little compartment for your tile device which you can see above. I love that I can track my luggage wherever it goes and never have to worry. It’s just an amazing added benefit.
Moving on to the other side of the suitcase, I’ll usually pack one or two handbags. If I have a smaller handbag I’ll place it inside of the larger handbag to save space and protect it – it also helps it keep its shape. For shoes like sandals or sneakers I usually don’t stress too much about them since they don’t get damaged too easily. If I have any high end shoes or flats I’ll place them in their dust bags, otherwise just place them on the other side with everything else. This is also the side I’ll put any leggings for my workouts, my hair tools, and any of my beauty products that I won’t be needing immediately.
To be honest, I’ll usually pack my jewelry and sunglasses in my carry-on because these are more valuable items and to be honest although jewelry is small in size, they actually weigh more than you might think, driving the weight of your luggage higher! So in my mind, it’s better to keep it in the carry on and save that extra weight for more clothes and shoes if you know what I mean!
Never pack your electronics in your checked bag – it’s just a risk you don’t want to deal with. I always take my camera equipment, laptop, iPad and everything else with me in the plane or pack it neatly in my carry-on! It makes my life SO much easier and you really never know when you’ll want to use it!
Oh to Be a Muse says
I have a trip to Palm Springs coming up so thanks so much for your packing tips. And I just got new luggage, so I’m pretty excited to finally use it!
