A question I get asked often is how I started working for myself and if I like being my own boss. Creating your own money-making opportunity to me is the absolute dream and I love every second of it and honestly wouldn’t have it any other way. However, I’m not going to sugar coat it – being an entrepreneur and working for yourself can have some stressful/difficult times as well. So with today’s blog post I thought, lets round up all the pros & cons of entrepreneurship in case any of you are ready to take the leap.
PROS
You always get to be in control.
Entrepreneurship means that you get to choose the work that you’re going to be doing. This was honestly one of the biggest reasons I decided to leave my corporate job and become and entrepreneur. You get to use your strengths in the way that you believe are best. Because you are in many ways in control of your own destiny, is can be a very satisfying experience to be an entrepreneur even if the money doesn’t come rolling in like a title wave. And trust me, the beginning is never easy.
There is a certain amount of freedom associated with entrepreneurship.
Although the hours can be long, there are also some levels of freedom that come with it. If you want to spend a day working at home, then you can do it. Go work at the coffee shop for awhile. Sit on the beach in the sunshine. I’ll be honest, that saying “love what you do and you’ll never work a day in your life” most often feel like I what I experience on a daily basis.
You get to be yourself.
Entrepreneurship means you get to be as creative and innovative as you want to be when it comes to running with your idea. There is nothing that exists that can confine you unless you allow it. You can chase your own goals, weave your work into your life, and go to work wearing a bathrobe if that’s what you want to do. Just sayin…
Emotionally Uplifting
The feeling of success is almost always worth all the struggles and disappointments. To see your business taking off is one of the most fulfilling things a person could experience in life. It makes everything worth it at the end, all the hard work, commitment, sleepless nights, EVERYTHING.
CONS
Income doesn’t usually happen on a regular basis.
Listen guys, this is the number one CON and if you don’t have the stomach to deal with it, this wont be for you. Business opportunities can speed up and they can slow down. There is no such thing as a regular paycheck in entrepreneurship. There’s only the income that you’re able to take home today. Some months are fantastic and others are horrid. You have to be able to save the money that you make from a fantastic month to compensate for the not so great ones.
Working schedules can be unpredictable.
You might be able to set your own hours as an entrepreneur, but that means you might wind up losing a lot of the work that comes your way. This is actually the biggest disadvantage of all for most people. Entrepreneurs can make a lot more money than standard employees, but it often comes because of longer, harder hours being worked. More times than not, I’m working 7 days a week, into the evening and often don’t have much of a weekend. So when everyone is out partying and having a grand ol time, I’m usually working my butt off. But if I’m being honest, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Stress
Listen – working for yourself can put you on a rollercoaster of emotions every day. Trust me, I’m there more often than I’d like to admit. Even though it is an exciting world, there will be days when you need to drag yourself out of bed. Stress can seriously take a toll on your mind & body.
With all that being said, I honestly wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m so blessed for what I’ve been able to create and that I have the opportunity to work for myself and support myself and my two pups. There truly is no better feeling in the world and I never ever take it for granted. My piece of advice? If you are ever thinking of taking the leap, DO IT! Life doesn’t ever actually get easier and there will never be the “right time” but I can tell you, when you love what you do you will always find a way to grind and make it happen in the end.
