The Importance of Being Independent

The ability to be independent is something that not everyone possesses. You need to be independent in order to survive in the world. Learning to support yourself is fundamental for any success you ever hope to achieve.

To be honest, I have lived alone since I was 23 and I wouldn’t ever take it back. It taught me SO much (and continues to daily). Some people think its weird but I love sitting at home by myself with my coffee reading or watching tv and just appreciating life. It gives me that individual time and to make decisions by myself. No, that doesn’t mean I’m anti-social but I appreciate that I can make my own rules and control the outcome of my life.

Now there’s also the obvious reason – to not be dependent on anyone other than yourself. While it makes sense when you’re a child to rely on your parents for important decisions, once you become an adult, you should be able to be comfortable doing things by yourself. Okay, that doesn’t mean I don’t get advice from my parents regularly – in fact, I probably ask them all too often what they think but that’s because I value and cherish the life experiences they have had and may be able to help guide me in the right direction. Listen, if you can get a job, make your own money, and support yourself, you can be self-reliant and fabulous. Don’t let yourself be taken care of – take care of yourself!

Another thing? Being independent can mean making our own mistakes and trust me, I’ve made a lot of them. However, these are often valuable as we have to live with the consequences, make them right and learn from them for the future. I can’t tell you how many mistakes I’ve made in the past that have actually taught me so much long term and helped me in other aspects of my life. 

Independence can help increase your self-value and self-esteem. The achievement of financial, emotional, social, career and personal independence gives you a sense of accomplishment that eventually changes how you rate yourself and how others view you.
