So I know I’m kind of lucky in the sense that I live in Southern California and we don’t get too much awful weather but not gonna lie – fall & winter are not my best months because I’m a total SUN lover! I literally take a 10min break multiple times a day just so I can go into my backyard and bask in the sun a little. I don’t know what it is but something about it just puts me in a better mood.
With that being said, I can’t avoid the fact that it’s winter time & getting cooler. With this year being the year of COVID, I haven’t been too interested in doing a ton of shopping and getting new clothes so I’ve been more interested than ever in making my current wardrobe work for the winter. As you guys know, I love dresses and just because the weather has changed a bit doesn’t mean I have to store them in my closet til next year. Here are a few tips on how to make dresses work for those colder months:
Layer Up
I am obsessed with layering a dress look with a sweater! I think this is such a great tip and one I like to keep in mind when I’m traveling. That way, you can have two completely separate looks with one dress. Wear your dress as is for one look, and with a sweater for the “top/skirt” effect. Another way to layer? Wear a turtleneck underneath your dress. Turtlenecks are chic and classic so it elevates a dress instantly.
Wear Boots
I love a good bootie and tend to wear them in the spring as well but they are on heavy rotation during the fall/winter months regardless of what I’m wearing. I will say, I will usually always grab a bootie a little taller than the ankle or even over-the-knee boots when I’m wearing any kind of dress. It’s just so fun and gives the dress a little edge.
Tights
SoCal usually doesn’t get excessively cold but in those colder climates, the key is to keep as much as your bare skin covered as possible. In that case, tights can definitely be worn with a dress to keep you warm and it still keeps an outfit looking extra chic!
Add a Jacket/Coat
One of my absolute favorite looks is a dress paired with a chic long coat and boots. Like I was saying above, SoCal doesn’t really get cold enough to quite pull this look off but it still is one of my absolute favorites. For me however, I usually opt for a cute leather jacket since they are timeless, go with everything and keep you extra warm when needed!
