Before I go on and write this I want everyone reading to be aware of one thing — this is solely my opinion and by no means anything I want you all to take to heart. I understand that some people love having a theme to their instagram feed and think it is extremely important. I am just voicing why these themes don’t work for me and why I believe you shouldn’t let it get to you either.
After spending a week in NYC for Fashion Week, I was surrounded by bloggers who talk about their images, their instagram feed and how they wanted to post a photo but couldn’t because it would mess up their feed. I kept thinking, “Damn, this sounds so ridiculous and stressful at the same time.” This isn’t the first time I’ve heard this but it just kicked it to the top of my mind and I knew I wanted to discuss this on the blog.
Yes, I’ll admit when you click on a new IG account for the first time and see their feed with a particular “theme” it looks pretty. It’s all the same and coordinated and such but I’m going to be honest here and say there are a few things I just don’t feel like work with a themed IG account.
I hate to say it but, it gets boring — it really does! I’ve asked a few people about it and this is actually what they’ve said to me about it so it’s not just my opinion.
Think about it — Why do people follow you on Instagram? Well, usually to get that sneak peek, that behind the scenes of what is going on day to day and to see things which aren’t necessarily on the blog. The instagrams I like to follow are full of varied snaps, all showing me what is going on. Keep it different and keeping it interesting. Although I don’t follow many people, I’ve found myself less and less following themed accounts. With that being said –could some themes work? Yes, I don’t think this is an exclusive statement but some accounts which mix up their images but still have something unifying such as a colour, filter or edit then I do think that could count as a ‘theme’.
Next up? It gets SO hard to take snaps. When theming your instagram, you are totally locked to images which fit your theme and in a lot of cases, these can be hard to get! I’ve been around bloggers who will NOT post an iPhone photo on their IG account, will not post color, have to de-saturate everything etc.. If you follow these “rules” you make it virtually impossible to post regularly! I mean, I want to post images that I like, share where I am, travel and not stress about it. When I’m mixing things up, it’s much easier to find images making it easier to post on a regular basis.
And finally, linking closely to the last point. You end up posting less. If I’ve learned anything from Instagram, it’s not only the time you can spend on Instagram but it’s how often you post. I find if I post 1-2 times a day on Instagram, my following will steadily increase.
That said, I know that when people have particular themes they are struggling for once a day! I saw this numerous times during NYFW and I couldn’t imagine being that stressed out to get an IG post up.
My thoughts on it all? Instagram is a platform to share you life, share your passions and more. Why limit yourself to only being able to post an image that “fits” in your theme? You cut yourself off to tons of opportunities to grow, link up with new brands, and just giving your readers what they are looking for — a look into your true life. Instagram for me is fun and a way to share pretty photos with all of you — the minute blogging or Instagraming begins to feel like a “chore” is when I know it’s time to stop so always remember to have fun with it and don’t stress too much! It’s truly not worth it!

Yes totally agreed! It’s hard not to stress about Instagram, especially as a new blogger because sometimes I want to showcase photos from my blog – other times I want to show my travels, but at the same time building my following so yeah, my Instagram is not always going to have one theme. I love following you because of this – you keep it real!
