A lot of the time I get random messages, emails, DM’s and more from people who express how they wish they could “do this” or “do that.” Just being in this industry in general I’m around a lot of people who are constantly comparing what they own vs. someone else or wishing their relationship was as perfect as the person they follow on instagram who they have never met before and the list goes on and on.
You get the point.
I’ll be honest, I’ve done that in the past but I shy so far away from it now it’s not even funny. I thought it was important to talk about why you should never be envious of someone else considering in today’s day and age social media is everywhere and I don’t see it going away anytime soon. To be honest, I’d be a little stressed if I had a child of my own. Comparison can be a scary, real thing and being on the other side of things I can see through a LOT of it which is why I wanted to write a blog post about it and shed light on it all.
To begin, I have to admit I have learned to surround myself with ONLY positive uplifting people in my life. I hate to say it, but that has come down to cutting a lot of people out and only kept a handful of close friends (all of which I can count on one hand) and my mom and dad. I am blessed that I can talk about anything with my parents and they give me the most sound and wise advice. Whenever I have felt down in the past they have always brought me up and lifted my spirits, taught me what’s most important in the world and reminded me one lesson in particular, “never compare yourself to other people and NEVER be envious of what other people have or appear to have.” Probably the best piece of advice I’ve ever been given. And hey, I too need to be reminded of it here and there.
1. What’s Meant For You Will Never Miss You
It sounds cliche, but it’s true. When I compare myself to others, I automatically beat myself up over what I don’t have, and what I think someone else has. This is insanity. The amazing things in life that I currently have or will have, will happen regardless of someone else. There is no comparison because everyone has a different journey and everyone’s journey happens on their own time. Never be envious – instead be ambitious and create a life that YOU want, not what you think someone else has.
2. People Only Show You What They Want You To See
This might seem like a no brainer, but the idea that people only show certain parts of their lives on social media (and even in person), is commonly overlooked. It boggles my mind how many people actually think instagrammers lives are as glamorous as they appear to be.
Do you really think all these blogger gals that you follow are always laying poolside with a cocktail or jet-setting to an exotic beach with their photographer boyfriend? Probably not. But, that’s what they choose to show the world often. Heck, as I’m writing this post for you guys right now I’m in some beat up sweats, haven’t washed my hair in about 3 days and desperately wishing I had plans on a Saturday night but in reality, I just don’t. Cuz I’m that cool.
3. Your Success Is Not Dependent Upon Someone Else’s
One of the biggest downfalls of comparing yourself to someone else is the thought that just because they have success, you won’t be successful. I have noticed this a lot in the blogger world as well. It’s ridiculous. Your success is not dependent upon the success I have and vice versa. There’s no finite number of people who can accomplish their dreams on this earth. There’s room for everyone to be happy, joyous and free in life.
4. Comparing Yourself to Someone Else Will Never Be Beneficial
It won’t. Plain and simple. Why? Because people were born different for a reason. We all have amazing things to contribute to society. Am I saying I’ll never look on social media and have feelings of envy or FOMO come up? No. But, the awareness I have today allows feelings of reason, clarity and self-love to flood in so deep, that I’m brought back to sanity.
5. Practice Gratitude
This is something I have talked about a lot in my instagram posts and on the blog. Always think about the milestones you have achieved and be proud of it. Always remember that when you are eyeing someone else’s success, others may also be seeing the same in you. Whenever you catch yourself feeling envious over someone else’s success think back on these 5 things I listed and realize that no good comes from it. Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire and continue to strive for what you want in life and not what others appear to have.

You are so wise in saying this Olia!! I think it’s only taken me 50 years to realize this (yet it still creeps in from time to time). But surrounding ourselves with the right people is key—uplifting and inspiring women are all around!!

Wonderful post! I agree with all your sentiments. We are human and will sometimes regress and compare ourselves to others. It’s reminders like this to be ourselves that will help life flow like God intended.

Dayum… that last one really got to me; “remember the milestones that you have achived” and “while you are eyeing someoneelse’s success, others may also be seeing the same in you” 🤧. This boosted my self confidence a lot, thank you Olia.
